Of the new passenger cars registered, around 7,000 were fully electric (+50%), and 49,282 units had hybrid propulsion (+2.1%).
The association said that in August 2026, new passenger car registrations in the European Union increased by 4.5% compared with August 2025, reaching 708,211 units.
As such, between January and August 2026, 7.546.397 passenger cars were registered in the EU, up 5.3% compared with the same period in 2025.
Of the total number of passenger cars registered in the EU, 1,641,333 units were fully electric, representing an increase of 44.5%, accounting for 21.7% of the total market, while 3,517,800 units had hybrid propulsion (17.6%), compared with the January-August 2025 period.
The association said that compared with the first eight months of 2025, increases in new passenger car registrations were recorded in France (3%), Germany (4.8%), Spain (6.3%) and Italy (8.5%), while Romania saw a decline of 10.6%.
“As regards automobile manufacturers, the largest number of new passenger cars registered across Europe in the first eight months was represented by the VW Group, with 2,359,023 units, up 0.9%, followed by the Stellantis Group with 1,360,488 units, up 4.7%, and the Renault Group with 857,937 units, down 3.3% (of which DACIA: 360,657 units, down 9.7% compared with January-August 2025),” ACAROM said.
At the same time, Ford passenger cars accounted for 244,938 newly registered units between January and August 2026, down 14.4% compared with the first eight months of 2025.
