Romania sees more than one pedestrian killed in road accidents every day in 2025

No fewer than 390 pedestrians lost their lives in serious road accidents in Romania in 2025, translating to more than one a day. Another 804 pedestrians were seriously injured, according to the 2025 Road Safety Bulletin, published by the General Inspectorate of the Romanian Police and cited by the CSR – Coalition for Road Safety.

Pedestrians registered the highest number of victims as a category, making them the most vulnerable road users, CSR noted. In 2025, they accounted for 30% of people killed and 26% of people seriously injured in road accidents.

The data also showed that pedestrian safety cannot be reduced to the responsibility of a single category of road users. In 2025, improper pedestrian crossings led to the death or serious injury of 418 people.

At the same time, failure to give way to pedestrians generated 338 victims, while the presence of pedestrians on the roadway generated another 191.

“An ordinary journey, to school, to work or home should end safely. For 390 pedestrians, in 2025, this did not happen. We need road safety education from an early age, drivers and pedestrians who respect the rules, but also visible and well-lit pedestrian crossings. Pedestrian safety must be a priority both in traffic and in the decisions of the authorities,” said Alexandru Ciuncan, President of CSR.

Nationally, Romania registered 3,950 accidents in 2025, resulting in the death of 1,293 people and the serious injury of 3,125 people. Compared to the same period in 2024, 285 fewer accidents were recorded (-6.7%), 185 fewer people died (-12.5%), and 122 fewer people were seriously injured (-3.7%).

The main causes of serious road accidents in 2025 were illegal crossing (16.1% of the total), failure to adapt speed to road conditions (15.3% of the total), and failure to yield the right of way to vehicles (9.5% of the total).
