Construction group STRABAG Romania announced that it commissioned a new EUR 3 million asphalt mixing plant in Avrig, Sibiu county. The facility will supply road infrastructure projects across central Romania and has an estimated annual production capacity of 220,000 tonnes.
The AMMANN plant can produce up to 150 tonnes of asphalt mixtures per hour for road base, binder, and wearing courses. It can use quarry stone, crushed and graded gravel aggregates, and recycled materials recovered from milled asphalt.
“The investment in this local production capacity represents a strategic choice,” said Cătălin Flămânzeanu, technical subdivision manager at STRABAG Romania.
Automated systems control production and monitor critical parameters in real time, including the quantities of aggregates, filler, additives, and bitumen, as well as mixture temperature and composition. Products are tested in STRABAG’s own laboratory, which is accredited by Romania’s State Inspectorate for Construction.
The plant can incorporate reclaimed asphalt pavement into as much as 10% of a bituminous mixture, reducing the use of new aggregates and bitumen, the company said. A mobile crushing unit will also process concrete waste from STRABAG construction and demolition sites, producing recycled aggregates that can be certified for reuse in road structures and earthworks.
Covered raw-material storage areas are equipped with photovoltaic panels with an installed capacity of approximately 230 kW. The facility also uses certified filtration systems and holds the environmental permits required for operating near protected areas, according to STRABAG.
Its location in Avrig allows the plant to serve more than three construction sites simultaneously while keeping asphalt within the temperatures required by regulations. The depot is designed to support deliveries of up to 1,000 tonnes per day.
STRABAG has operated in Romania since 1991 and employs around 2,500 people in the country. The company reported an output volume of EUR 510.21 million in 2025 and operates 14 asphalt plants nationwide, with combined estimated annual production of 800,000 tonnes.
