Performance-based remuneration is important to 43% of Romanian employees, while 42% favor pay linked to their skills and competencies, according to an SD Worx survey. Both shares are significantly higher than the European figures of 29% and 28%, respectively.
Support with pensions and retirement planning was selected by 35% of Romanian respondents, slightly above the European share of 33%. However, only 26% of Romanian employers offer pension schemes, compared with 31% across Europe, while 20% provide retirement-planning support, versus 24% at European level.
According to the same source, employees in Romania also place greater emphasis on understanding their remuneration packages. Clear information about pay levels and pay equity is valued by 28%, while 30% want a comprehensive overview of their rewards and benefits.
“The data show that Romanian employees want a clearer link between their contribution and what they receive in return,” SD Worx Romania representatives said. “Performance and competencies drive local preferences, but transparency, freedom of choice, and financial security also carry significant weight.”
The survey also revealed that the ability to choose the components of a remuneration package matters to 29% of Romanian employees, compared with 22% across Europe. Meanwhile, 25% value discounts or cost-of-living support, 23% are interested in short-term financial assistance, and 20% would value access to earned wages before payday.
The SD Worx HR & Payroll Pulse study surveyed 16,500 employees and 5,936 HR decision-makers across 16 European countries, including 989 employees in Romania. Respondents could select multiple options.
