Romania’s electricity imports shrink threefold in January-July as consumption drops, production rises

At the same time, final consumption decreased by 4.3% y/y to 28.1 TWh.

This resulted in a net import of electricity of only1 TWh in January-July, three times lower compared to the same period last year.

Gross import of electricity dropped by 9.5% y/y to 10 TWh – still high compared to domestic consumption (more than a third).

Short-term market data indicated that, despite the overall improving balance in the trade with electricity, Romania is paying high prices for imports during the peak hours.
