Romanian hydropower group Hidroelectrica (BVB: H2O) announced that, following a public procurement procedure, it awarded a RON 297 million (EUR 56 million) contract for a battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Iron Gates II hydropower plant on the Danube to Synergy Construct, which will cooperate with subcontractors including Kseo Enerji Anonim Sirketi, Professional Land Survey, Zoork, Tripol Sistem Construct, Inemko Insaat Elektrik Telekominikasyon Sanayi Ve Ticaret Limited Sirketi and Rogotehnic.
Bucharest-based Synergy Construct was founded in Romania in 2001 and has since established leading positions across international markets where the Group operates, including Hungary, Romania, Georgia, Türkiye, Germany, Poland, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Spain, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Slovakia.
The Iron Gates II BESS project, with a contracted value of RON 297 million, will have an installed power capacity of 64 MW and a storage capacity of 434.8 MWh, making it the largest battery energy storage facility in Hidroelectrica’s portfolio.
The installation will have a discharge duration of 6.8 hours, compared with an average of around two hours for BESS installations in Romania and three hours in Bulgaria. This means it can store energy for longer and deliver power at its nameplate capacity of 64 MW for a longer period.
According to Hidroelectrica’s investment director, Bogdan Badea, cited by Profit.ro, the specifications provided for a minimum storage capacity of 256 MWh. Following the public procurement procedure, Hidroelectrica will benefit from a 434.76 MWh installation – about 70% more than the minimum requirement, based on Synergy Construct’s winning bid.
The project benefits from RON 43.4 million in financing through the Modernisation Fund, under the “Supporting Investments in the Development of Electricity Storage Capacities (Batteries)” programme, implemented by the Ministry of Energy.
