President Nicușor Dan will lead Romania’s delegation to the high-level segment of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, which will take place in New York next month, according to an announcement from the Presidential Administration.
The central theme of the next UN session is ‘Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.’
The head of state will deliver the national statement in the plenary session of the UN General Assembly on September 23. He will highlight Romania’s efforts to support the organization’s reform process and the country’s contribution to ensuring peace, security and an international order based on rules and norms, according to the same source.
This is the first time president Nicușor Dan will attend the UN General Assembly. Last year, Romania was represented by foreign minister Oana Țoiu. Dan explained at the time that he did not go to New York because he considered it “more useful” to be present in the country.
At the next UN assembly, the president will also participate in New York in events organized on the sidelines of the high-level segment. He will hold bilateral meetings with other heads of state or government, including to support Romania’s candidacy for the leadership of the International Organisation of La Francophonie.
Former European Commissioner Dacian Cioloș is supported by Romania for the position of Secretary General of the OIF.
