Similar demonstrations were reported in several cities across Romania, including Oradea, where Bolojan served as mayor.<\/p>\n<p>The rallies come amid rising political tensions after the Social Democratic Party (PSD), previously part of the governing coalition, and the far-right Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), which is currently in opposition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/no-confidence-motion-backed-over-half-mps-2026\" target=\"_blank\">filed a motion of censure against the government<\/a>, scheduled for debate and vote on May 5.<\/p>\n<p>By early Sunday evening, hundreds of people had gathered in Bucharest\u2019s central square, according to local media, holding signs reading \u201cWe support reform\u201d and \u201cWe support the Ilie Bolojan government.\u201d Protesters said they turned out to back the prime minister and urge lawmakers to reject the motion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe came to support the prime minister because he is the most capable leader we\u2019ve had in decades. I know the measures are tough, but they are necessary,\u201d one participant told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digi24.ro\/stiri\/actualitate\/politica\/manifestatie-pro-bolojan-in-piata-victoriei-cu-doua-zile-inainte-de-motiunea-de-cenzura-depusa-de-aur-si-psd-3754357\" target=\"_blank\">Digi24<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Another protester cited Ilie Bolojan\u2019s \u201cintegrity and strong character\u201d as reasons for support, while others said they hoped to influence MPs ahead of the vote.<\/p>\n\n<p>In Oradea, where Bolojan previously served as mayor, turnout estimates varied from around 1,500 to over 4,000 participants. Current mayor Florin Birta called on residents to rally \u201cfor normality,\u201d praising Ilie Bolojan\u2019s track record of reforms.<\/p>\n\n<p>The demonstrations remained peaceful, with security forces on standby.<\/p>\n<p>Prime minister Ilie Bolojan thanked people for their support in a post on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you to those who supported me today, both in the squares and online. As I have said, I see this support as one for the modernization of Romania, a country without privileges, with an efficient state that respects its citizens,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n<p>The political crisis follows\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/psd-ministers-resignations-romania-april-2026\" target=\"_blank\">PSD\u2019s recent withdrawal<\/a> from the pro-European ruling coalition, which had included PNL, the Save Romania Union (USR), and the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania |(UDMR).
