The institute argued that the trend \u201cfundamentally threatens democratic values and institutions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Daniel \u015eandru, executive president of IICCMER, stated that \u201cthe crimes of the communist regime, the repressions of the Securitate, the restrictions on fundamental freedoms, hunger, cold and suffering are, unfortunately, trivialised today and replaced by campaigns to rewrite history and whitewash the totalitarian past.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His comments were included in the public appeal addressed to the head of state and the prime minister.<\/p>\n<p>The appeal noted that Romania will soon mark the thirty-sixth anniversary of the end of the communist regime, described as \u201can illegitimate and criminal regime, a totalitarian system that, through its atrocities, left deep marks on our collective conscience.\u201d \u015eandru wrote that Romanians had a \u201cmoral obligation to do everything in our power so that that terrible history would never be repeated,\u201d but said the country had \u201csignificantly deviated from this fundamental duty.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He stressed that this moment should not be viewed as one of \u201ccapitulation\u201d or \u201cresignation\u201d but rather of acknowledging \u201ca painful but necessary truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to \u015eandru, Romanian society is \u201cpassively witnessing a furious, systematically coordinated assault, intended to rewrite and distort the historical reality of the recent past.\u201d He warned that this situation represents \u201can existential danger for the memory and identity of Romanian society.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The institute reiterated that the crimes of the communist period, including the actions of the Securitate and restrictions on basic freedoms, along with hunger, cold, and suffering, are increasingly being trivialised and replaced by efforts to rehabilitate the totalitarian past.<\/p>\n<p><em>iulian@romania-insider.com<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>(Photo source: Inquam Photos\/Octav Ganea)<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Institute for the Investigation of the Crimes of Communism and the Memory of Romanian Exile (IICCMER) has issued a public appeal to president Nicu\u015for Dan and prime minister Ilie Bolojan to demonstrate \u201cfirmness in decision-making\u201d in order to counter what it describes as an \u201cincreasingly insidious phenomenon of pro-totalitarian nostalgia,\u201d G4media.ro reported.
