Defense minister Ionu\u021b Mo\u0219teanu noted that around 800 US troops will be pulled back primarily from the Mihail Kog\u0103lniceanu base, while the teams at Deveselu and C\u00e2mpia Turzii remain unchanged.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement posted on X, Matthew Whitaker noted Romania&#8217;s growing role within NATO and its close cooperation with the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Across NATO, Allies like Romania are demonstrating increased capability and responsibility. During 20 plus years as a NATO Ally, Romania has consistently partnered with the United States to meet our common defense objectives. That partnership remains stronger than ever,&#8221; reads the message.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The United States remains committed to Romania &#8211; as a trusted NATO Ally, a vital strategic partner, and a driving force for security in Europe. The American leader said, &#8220;You&#8217;d have to ask. I mean, I can tell you about it, but it&#8217;s not very significant, it&#8217;s not a big deal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Reporter: What is the thinking behind reducing troops in Romania?<\/p>\n<p>Trump: You\u2019d have to ask<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/5rW32rdZwx\">pic.twitter.com\/5rW32rdZwx<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Spencer Hakimian (@SpencerHakimian) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SpencerHakimian\/status\/1983763164916543501?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 30, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The US Department of War <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europeafrica.army.mil\/ArticleViewPressRelease\/Article\/4326550\/press-release-department-of-war-announces-change-to-army-unit-rotation-in-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in an official announcement that the Army unit rotation in Europe is not an American withdrawal from the region &#8220;or a signal of lessened commitment to NATO and Article 5,&#8221; but rather &#8220;a positive sign of increased European capability and responsibility.\u00a0&#8220;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The US maintains a robust presence throughout the European Theater, and maintains the ability to array forces and capabilities to meet objectives in the Theater and support U.S.\u00a0priorities, including President Trump&#8217;s commitment to defend NATO allies,&#8221; reads the statement.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate reaction, US Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, and Representative Mike Rogers (R-AL), Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, said they &#8220;oppose the decision not to maintain the rotational US brigade in Romania\u00a0and the Pentagon&#8217;s process for its ongoing force posture review that may result in further drawdowns of US forces from Eastern Europe.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Romania has been a strong ally, making major investments to host US forces and modernize the infrastructure that supports them. Romania has spent over 2% of GDP on its military for many years and has pledged to achieve 5% of GDP. These investments, alongside their contributions to NATO&#8217;s eastern defenses and Black Sea security, underscore Romania&#8217;s central role in the Alliance&#8217;s security.
