During an interview given on Thursday, September 25, Romanian president Nicu\u0219or Dan<\/strong> said that far-right former presidential candidate C\u0103lin Georgescu, who declared no campaign funds in the cancelled 2024 presidential elections, had behind him \u201ca network that included some Romanians with money.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cC\u0103lin Georgescu was not such a lone rider who had, let\u2019s say, a vision, which vision convinced 2-3 million people. He had behind him a network that included some Romanians with money,\u201d Nicu\u0219or Dan told Digi24<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe is someone who has had this vocation of savior for a long time. And, at one point, some people with money aligned behind him,\u201d the president specified.<\/p>\n

He added that the network\u2019s source can be traced back to Moscow. \u201cThe fact that the elections in Romania could have been influenced by Russia is very clear, and that is proven,\u201d Dan said.<\/p>\n

The president further stated that he was first skeptical of the part played by Hora\u021biu Potra, the head of the mercenary group behind Georgescu, who planned to incite protests and destabilize the government<\/a> at that time.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat could 10 people do with a few knives and 3 grenades? But in fact, they weren\u2019t 5-6, they were about 70, and they were people who had trained to do such a thing in a public gathering. For example, to force the entrance into a public gathering,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

During the same interview, Dan praised former president Klaus Iohannis and the Constitutional Court for standing by their decision annulling the 2024 presidential elections<\/a> after evidence of external influence. \u201cIt was a moment of weakness and of error. But it ended with a courageous decision,\u201d he said, highlighting the hybrid war waged by Russia on Europe.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The president also said that Romanian intelligence services had information about C\u0103lin Georgescu, but that they were surprised by the speed and intensity of the social media campaign promoting him. The same phenomenon shocked allied intelligence services, he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe partner services do not deal with Romania, but they keep an eye on the global world. It was a surprise for everyone the way in which it was operated for a very short period of time,\u201d explained Nicu\u0219or Dan.<\/p>\n

Although the annulment was necessary, Dan said, it left a scar on Romanian society, dividing it into two roughly equal parts that no longer listen to each other.<\/p>\n

This month, prosecutors sent former presidential candidate C\u0103lin Georgescu to trial on charges of complicity in an attempted coup<\/a>, alongside alleged paramilitary leader Hora\u021biu Potra and 20 other people. Investigators argue Georgescu benefited from hybrid warfare operations coordinated by Russia during the country\u2019s 2024 presidential election crisis.<\/p>\n

Potra, in turn, was\u00a0detained in Dubai<\/a>\u00a0in this week along with two family members, and authorities are in the process of bringing him back to Romania to face justice.\u00a0<\/p>\n
