{"id":6520,"date":"2025-08-28T09:01:42","date_gmt":"2025-08-28T09:01:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=6520"},"modified":"2025-08-28T09:01:42","modified_gmt":"2025-08-28T09:01:42","slug":"leaders-of-france-germany-and-poland-travel-to-the-republic-of-moldova-to-back-pro-eu-camp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=6520","title":{"rendered":"Leaders of France, Germany, and Poland travel to the Republic of Moldova to back pro-EU camp"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The leaders of France, Germany, and Poland traveled to the Republic of Moldova on Wednesday, August 27, to convince people to support the country\u2019s pro-EU government a month from now, on September 28, at the parliamentary elections.\u00a0Emmanuel Macron,\u00a0Friedrich Merz, and\u00a0Donald Tusk delivered emotional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/maia.sandu\/videos\/1564985531136114\">speeches<\/a> in Chi\u0219in\u0103u and surprised the crowd when they addressed them in Romanian.<\/p>\n<p>Moldova\u2019s pro-EU president, Maia Sandu, and the governing Party of Action and Solidarity, or PAS, face not only the polls but Russian machinations as well, as Moscow strives to prevent the country from joining the EU.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>To encourage pro-EU voters and convince others, Emmanuel Macron, Friedrich Merz, and Donald Tusk held speeches at the Great National Assembly Square in Chi\u0219in\u0103u on Wednesday evening, to mark Moldova\u2019s National Day.<\/p>\n<p>Macron was welcomed with cheers and ovations by the crowd, before which he delivered a speech in favor of Moldova\u2019s integration into the EU, entirely in Romanian.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have come to bring you a message of friendship from the French people, who admire your fight for democracy and justice! The Republic of Moldova can be proud of the path it has followed since independence and can have confidence in its European destiny and future: you are already part of the European family and you can count on Europe\u2019s support and respect,\u201d said Macron.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Standing with president Maia Sandu, the three leaders praised Moldova&#8217;s resilience in the face of Russian meddling.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Kremlin propaganda tells us that Europeans want to prolong the war and that the European Union oppresses people,\u201d said Macon, about Russia\u2019s war in Ukraine. \u201cThese are lies. Unlike Russia, the European Union threatens no one and respects everyone&#8217;s sovereignty,&#8221; Macron said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The speech was posted by Emmanuel Macron on his <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EmmanuelMacron\/status\/1960773756286329081\">official X account<\/a>, accompanied by a comment also written in Romanian: \u201cDatorit\u0103 vou\u0103, \u00een aceast\u0103 sear\u0103, inima Europei bate mai puternic ca niciodat\u0103, la Chi\u0219in\u0103u!\u201d (Thanks to you, Europe\u2019s heart beats stronger than ever tonight, in Chi\u0219in\u0103u!)<\/p>\n<p>Donald Tusk also spoke in Romanian, while the German chancellor spoke in English but posted <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/bundeskanzler\/status\/1960789999365836879\">messages in Romanian on X<\/a>. Tusk\u2019s speech, marked by messages of European solidarity, was met with applause and chants of \u201cBravo!\u201d from the people.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoldova is part of the European family. Dear madam president, dear Maia Sandu, Germany, France, and Poland stand with a free and European Moldova. We are by your side to support you in safeguarding freedom and sovereignty,\u201d said Friedrich Merz.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Russia has a long history of interfering in Moldova\u2019s politics through sponsoring pro-Moscow politicians, bribing voters, or planning to destabilize the small country.<\/p>\n<p>Back in October 2024, the heads of Moldova&#8217;s security institutions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/hundreds-moldovan-citizens-trained-russia-overthrow-government-oct-2024\">announced<\/a> that several hundred Moldovan citizens were trained in Russia, Serbia, and Bosnia-Herzegovina to incite street movements aimed at overthrowing the constitutional order. The same month, voters in the Republic of Moldova gave Maia Sandu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/moldova-referendum-presidential-elections-october-2024\">a second term<\/a> and backed EU membership in a special referendum by a margin of 50.4%.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Moldova\u2019s national security adviser Stanislav Secrieru warned of disinformation aimed at the diaspora and even of possible disruptions at polling stations abroad. Russia also already has troops in a breakaway region of Moldova, but they are isolated and few in number.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, Romanian prime minister Ilie Bolojan conducted his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/romania-ilie-bolojan-working-visit-moldova-august-2025\">first foreign visit<\/a> since taking office to Moldova, meeting with the Moldovan president, prime minister, and the speaker of the Parliament.
