The ancient forests of B\u0103iu\u021b in northern Romania are poised to host Eastern Europe\u2019s first certified forest therapy trail, a pioneering project blending science, health, and conservation, WWF Romania said. Announced during the \u201cThe Forest Heals\u201d symposium on June 4, the initiative aims to transform the centuries-old woods of Str\u00e2mbu-B\u0103iu\u021b, part of Romania\u2019s UNESCO Natural World Heritage sites, into a model for preventive healthcare and ecological tourism.<\/p>\n
At the same time, researchers have launched a study into the unusually high longevity of B\u0103iu\u021b\u2019s residents, exploring whether the commune could earn recognition as a new \u201cBlue Zone\u201d- a term used globally to describe areas where people live significantly longer and healthier lives.<\/p>\n
\u201c\u2018The forest heals\u2019 is not just a metaphor, it\u2019s a scientifically supported reality,\u201d said Walter \u00dcbelhart from the Johannes Banfi Hunyades Multicultural Association. \u201cWe want B\u0103iu\u021b to be the first place in Eastern Europe to host an officially recognized forest therapy trail.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe B\u0103iu\u021b forests are more than biodiversity reserves or living laboratories of ecology,\u201d said Radu Vlad, Forest Program Manager at WWF Romania. \u201cThey can serve as spaces for preventive medicine and engines of responsible local development. This is a clear example of how nature conservation brings direct benefits to communities.\u201d<\/p>\n
Once a mining town, B\u0103iu\u021b is now reimagining its future around the \u201cgreen gold\u201d of its ancient woodlands. The proposed forest therapy trail could become a best-practice model for combining wellness tourism, cultural heritage, and ecosystem protection.<\/p>\n\n
