{"id":5181,"date":"2025-05-27T08:06:47","date_gmt":"2025-05-27T08:06:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=5181"},"modified":"2025-05-27T08:06:47","modified_gmt":"2025-05-27T08:06:47","slug":"former-far-right-presidential-candidate-calin-georgescu-retires-from-romanian-politics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=5181","title":{"rendered":"Former far-right presidential candidate C\u0103lin Georgescu retires from Romanian politics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>C\u0103lin Georgescu<\/strong>, the far-right populist who surprisingly emerged as the first-round winner of\u00a0last year&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/ccr-annuls-presidential-elections-romania-december-2024\" target=\"_blank\">annulled presidential elections<\/a>, announced Monday evening in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/calingeorgescuro\/videos\/1359301538857042\" target=\"_blank\">video<\/a> message on social media that he is stepping away from active political life to focus on his family, which he says needs &#8220;peace and especially health&#8221; after a tumultuous period.<\/p>\n<p>Georgescu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/calin-georgescu-barred-presidential-elections-ccr-romania-march-2025\" target=\"_blank\">was barred from running again<\/a> in the repeat May 2025 presidential elections. He thus backed the candidacy of George Simion, the leader of the far-right party AUR, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/romania-presidential-elections-2025-exit-polls-show-bucharest-mayor-lead-both-candidates-claim\" target=\"_blank\">lost the election to Nicu\u0219or Dan<\/a>, the former mayor of Bucharest, who ran as an independent.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am now focusing all my attention and energy on my family,&#8221; Georgescu said, adding that he is not part of any political party and does not intend to join or lead one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He also ruled out launching any new political platform or seeking public office, describing his decision as a &#8220;responsible choice made out of respect for the Romanian people and the current national context.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Further on, Georgescu stated that he would now be a &#8220;passive observer of public and social life&#8221; and thanked both his supporters and critics, noting that differing opinions are part of a healthy democracy.<\/p>\n<p>C\u0103lin Georgescu <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/calin-georgescu-questioned-investigation-romania-feb-2025\" target=\"_blank\">is currently under judicial supervision<\/a> and being investigated for six offenses, including attempted incitement against the constitutional order, spreading false information, continuous false statements, and initiating or supporting fascist, racist, xenophobic, or antisemitic organizations.
