{"id":449,"date":"2024-06-10T10:01:37","date_gmt":"2024-06-10T10:01:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=449"},"modified":"2024-06-10T10:01:37","modified_gmt":"2024-06-10T10:01:37","slug":"local-elections-2024-partial-results-show-most-of-romanias-major-cities-reelect-mayors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=449","title":{"rendered":"Local elections 2024: Partial results show most of Romania\u2019s major cities reelect mayors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Romanians elected their representatives in local administration, including the general mayor of the capital, county council presidents, members of the General Council of the Municipality of Bucharest, county councils, local mayors, sector mayors of the Capital, and members of local councils for each administrative-territorial unit on Sunday, June 9.<\/p>\n<p>Voter turnout nationwide for the local elections was 49.95% by 10:00 PM on Sunday, when the polls closed, according to the Central Electoral Bureau. Over nine million voters cast their ballots.<\/p>\n<p>According to latest partial results, incumbent mayors kept their seats in Bucharest (general mayor), District 3, District 4, and District 6, but also in Cluj-Napoca, Timisoara, Iasi, Constanta, Craiova, Braila, Arad, Oradea, Campulung, Buzau, Botosani, Galati, and Sibiu.<\/p>\n<p>In District 1, District 2, and District 5 of the capital, the mayoral seat seems to have changed hands, although hotly disputed in the first two. The same happened in Baia Mare, Piatra Neamt, Ploiesti, Slatina, Suceava, and Brasov.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In <strong>Bucharest<\/strong>, Nicu\u0219or Dan (independent) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/first-exit-poll-local-ep-elections-jun-9-024\">won a new mandate as mayor<\/a>, receiving 47.55% of the votes, after counting votes from most sections, according to data uploaded by the Permanent Electoral Authority. Former mayor Gabriela Firea (PSD) was the runner-up with 22.3%, followed by PUSL\u2019s Cristian Popescu Piedone (PUSL), with 16%. According to the BEC, in Bucharest, 41.28% of voters cast their ballots by 10:00 PM.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from the general mayor, the people of Bucharest also voted for the mayors of the capital\u2019s six sectors.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong><em>District 1<\/em><\/strong>, PNL&#8217;s George Tu\u021b\u0103 (PNL) is leading amid 98.7% of precincts reporting, but Clotilde Armand\u2019s (USR) team claims votes are still being counted. <strong><em>District 2<\/em><\/strong> is witnessing a showdown between Radu Mihaiu (USR) and Rare\u0219 Hopinc\u0103 (PSD). The latter claims to have won, however.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong><em>District 3<\/em><\/strong>, incumbent Robert Negoi\u021b\u0103 (PSD) won another term with over of the vote, and so did <strong><em>District 4<\/em><\/strong>\u2019s Daniel B\u0103lu\u021b\u0103 (PSD), who secured a new term with 60%. In <strong><em>District 5<\/em><\/strong>, Vlad Popescu Piedone (PUSL), son of incumbent Cristian Popescu Piedone, won with 43%. Finally, PNL\u2019s Ciprian Ciucu won almost 73% of the votes in <strong><em>District 6<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Partial results in major cities:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Longtime <strong><em>Cluj-Napoca<\/em><\/strong> mayor Emil Boc (PNL) won a sixth term with 42.6% of the votes. So did USR mayor Dominic Fritz in <strong><em>Timisoara<\/em><\/strong>, with almost 50% of votes to former mayor Nicolae Robu\u2019s 37.7%.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Lia Olgu\u021ba Vasilescu (PSD) won with 55.3% of the vote in <strong><em>Craiova<\/em><\/strong>, securing another mandate.<\/p>\n<p>Social Democrat Doru D\u0103ncu\u0219 reportedly won the mayoral mandate for <strong><em>Baia Mare<\/em><\/strong>, besting liberal Ionel Bogdan. In <strong><em>Constanta<\/em><\/strong>, on the Black Sea, incumbent Vergil Chi\u021bac (PNL) seems to have bested Stelian Ion (USR), 29% to 20%.<\/p>\n<p>In the meantime, Marian Dragomir (PSD) secured a new mandate as mayor of the eastern city of <strong><em>Br\u0103ila<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong><em>Ia\u0219i<\/em><\/strong>, the latest data shows incumbent mayor Mihai Chirica (PNL) and Costel Alexe (PNL) as winners of new mandates for the mayor and County Council President of Ia\u0219i, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Elena Lasconi (USR) was re-elected as mayor, and the ADU Alliance is set to hold a majority in the Local Council in <strong><em>C\u00e2mpulung<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong><em>Piatra-Neam\u021b<\/em><\/strong>, liberal mayor Andrei Carabelea acknowledged his defeat to PSD&#8217;s Adrian Ni\u021b\u0103 by a few hundred votes.<\/p>\n<p>In western Romania, in <strong><em>Arad<\/em><\/strong>, current\u00a0 PNL mayor C\u0103lin Bibar\u021b appears to have won a new mandate, according to ongoing parallel vote counting. In <strong><em>Oradea<\/em><\/strong>, mayor Florin Birta was reelected for a new term with 68.5% of the votes.<\/p>\n<p>Independent deputy Mihai Poli\u021beanu announced he was elected mayor of<strong><em> Ploie\u0219ti<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong><em>Slatina<\/em><\/strong>, PNL candidate Mario De Mezzo won the mayoral elections and celebrated with supporters in the streets, attributing the victory to public dissatisfaction with the current administration.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong><em>Buz\u0103u<\/em><\/strong>, mayor Constantin Toma (PSD) secured his third term with over 60% of the votes, and PSD gained a majority in the Municipal Council.\u00a0<strong><em>Boto\u0219ani<\/em><\/strong> incumbent mayor Cosmin Andrei (PSD) also claimed victory, emphasizing teamwork and a constructive campaign.<\/p>\n<p>In <strong><em>Gala\u021bi<\/em><\/strong>, Ionu\u021b Pucheanu (PSD) won a third term as mayor.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, in\u00a0<strong><em>Suceava<\/em><\/strong>, Vasile R\u00eembu (PSD) won the mayoral election, ending 20 years of PNL leadership.
