{"id":2895,"date":"2024-12-05T13:59:03","date_gmt":"2024-12-05T13:59:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=2895"},"modified":"2024-12-05T13:59:03","modified_gmt":"2024-12-05T13:59:03","slug":"romanian-prosecutors-open-probe-into-alleged-manipulation-money-laundering-in-calin-georgescus-presidential-campaign","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=2895","title":{"rendered":"Romanian prosecutors open probe into alleged manipulation, money laundering in C\u0103lin Georgescu&#8217;s presidential campaign"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Romania&#8217;s Prosecutor General&#8217;s Office has initiated an investigation ex officio into the financing of independent candidate C\u0103lin Georgescu&#8217;s presidential campaign, citing potential voter manipulation and money laundering violations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biziday.ro\/304127-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Biziday.ro<\/a> reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The investigation follows <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/romania-declassified-reports-calin-georgescu-presidential-elections-2024\" target=\"_blank\">the recent declassification of documents from the Supreme Council for National Defense (CSAT)<\/a>, which suggest that pro-Russian candidate C\u0103lin Georgescu received undeclared external financing and involved state actors in his campaign, which was mainly carried out online on the TikTok platform.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The investigation focuses on indications of electoral offenses that may have influenced the voting process through methods such as voter manipulation, including online, aimed at persuading individuals to vote for a specific candidate,&#8221; reads the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mpublic.ro\/content\/c_05-12-2024-13-12\" target=\"_blank\">statement<\/a> from the Public Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecutors also investigate alleged &#8220;money laundering offenses related to possible illegalities concerning the origin and use of funds used to illegally finance a candidate&#8217;s electoral campaign by their supporters.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Plus, the investigation also focuses on cybercrimes under the jurisdiction of standard prosecutorial offices, the statement also said.
