In the country, Romanians will go to the polls on Sunday, December 8. However, Pricopie asserted that Romania is vulnerable, \u201cfacing a coup d\u2019\u00e9tat that Russia has been preparing for a long time,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edupedu.ro\/snspa-sesizeaza-curtea-constitutionala-pentru-suspendarea-turului-doi-al-alegerilor-prezidentiale-si-scoaterea-de-pe-buletinele-de-vot-a-candidatului-beneficiar-al-unui-complot-rem\/\">Edupedu<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, December 4, documents provided by Romanian intelligence services declassified by the Presidential Administration showed that state actors have tried to influence the Romanian elections. The US Department of State <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/us-state-department-russia-romania-presidential-elections-dec-2024\">expressed concern<\/a> following the report.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, Romania&#8217;s Prosecutor General&#8217;s Office <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/prosecutors-probe-calin-georgescu-campaign-fraud-romania-2024\">initiated an investigation ex officio<\/a> into the financing of independent candidate C\u0103lin Georgescu&#8217;s presidential campaign, citing potential voter manipulation and money laundering violations.<\/p>\n<p>A petition to redo the first round of voting has already been submitted by the publication Calea European\u0103, given the conclusions regarding the distortion of Romania\u2019s electoral process through a series of illegalities identified and publicly reported by CSAT.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Separately, Cristian Terhe\u0219, a conservative candidate in the first round, who received 1% of the votes, also declared that he has once again requested the Constitutional Court to annul the November 24 election.\u00a0Compared to the petition submitted last week and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/cc-validates-first-round-dec-2024\">rejected by judges on Monday<\/a>, the new request is based on the documents declassified by the Presidential Administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>However, the petitions are reportedly inadmissible, as the Constitutional Court has validated the results of the first round, won by C\u0103lin Georgescu with 23% of the votes, followed by Elena Lasconi with 19%. Furthermore, the submission deadline has been exceeded, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biziday.ro\/304122-2\/\">Biziday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In reply to concerns and petitions, Toni Grebla, head of the Romanian electoral authority AEP, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.ro\/politic-intern\/presedintele-aep-toni-grebla-dupa-ce-ccr-a-validat-rezultatele-primului-tur-de-scrutin-nu-exista-cale-de-atac-impotriva-deciziei-pronuntate-de-curte-1922401005002024121421859036\">said<\/a> that there is no way to annul the results of the first round of the presidential elections after the Constitutional Court validated it.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Romania\u2019s pro-European parties, from the center-left to the center-right, have rallied behind reformist candidate Elena Lasconi against surprise independent candidate Calin Georgescu, seen as the beneficiary of the Russian interference.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"mailto:radu@romania-insider.com\">radu@romania-insider.com<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>(Photo source:\u00a0Inquam Photos | Sabin Cirstoveanu)<\/em><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Remus Pricopie, the rector of public university SNSPA, stated that the institution is preparing a petition for Constitutional Court to suspend the second round of presidential elections, citing recently declassified documents showing Russian interference in the electoral process.
