{"id":221,"date":"2024-05-23T13:08:04","date_gmt":"2024-05-23T13:08:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=221"},"modified":"2024-05-23T13:08:04","modified_gmt":"2024-05-23T13:08:04","slug":"romanian-poet-ana-blandiana-awarded-2024-princess-of-asturias-prize-for-literature","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=221","title":{"rendered":"Romanian poet Ana Blandiana awarded 2024 Princess of Asturias Prize for Literature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Romanian poet\u00a0<strong>Ana Blandiana<\/strong>\u00a0has been awarded the 2024 Princess of Asturias Prize for Literature (<em>Premio Princesa de Asturias de las Letras<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>The jury for the award was chaired by Santiago Mu\u00f1oz Machado and made up of Xos\u00e9 Ballesteros Rey, Xuan Bello Fern\u00e1ndez, Blanca Beras\u00e1tegui Garaiz\u00e1bal, Gonzalo Celorio Blasco, Jes\u00fas Garc\u00eda Calero, Pablo Gil Cuevas, Francisco Goyanes Mart\u00ednez, Lola Larumbe Doral, Aurora Luque Ortiz, In\u00e9s Mart\u00edn Rodrigo, Juan Mayorga Ruano, Carmen Mill\u00e1n Grajales, Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Pou Serra, Ana Santos Aramburo, Irene Vallejo Moreu, Juan Villoro Ruiz and Fernando Rodr\u00edguez Lafuente.<\/p>\n<p>Ricardo Rivero Ortega, the rector of the University of Salamanca, proposed the candidacy.<\/p>\n<p>Born in Timi\u0219oara in 1942, Ana Blandiana (the pen name of Otilia Valeria Coman) published her first book of poems &#8211;\u00a0<em>Persoana \u00eent\u00e2ia plural (First person plural) &#8211;\u00a0<\/em>in 1964. She worked for the magazines\u00a0<em>Viata Studenteasca<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>Amfiteatru<\/em>\u00a0\u2013 where she published poems that have become icons of the fight against the communist dictatorship \u2013 and as a librarian at the Bucharest Institute of Fine Arts. In the late 1980s, she began writing protest poetry.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the 1989 Revolution, she started a campaign that promoted the elimination of the communist legacy and the creation of an open society. Since 1994 she has been a founding member and president of the Civic Alliance Foundation, an apolitical movement aiming to counteract the consequences of more than fifty years of communism in the country.<\/p>\n<p>She is the honorary president of the PEN of Romania, a member of the European Academy of Poetry, the Mallarm\u00e9 Poetry Academy, the World Poetry Academy (UNESCO), and the Romanian Writers&#8217; Union.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Previous recipients of the\u00a0<em>Princess of Asturias Award for Literature<\/em>\u00a0include Haruki Murakami (2023), Juan Mayorga (2022), Emmanuel Carr\u00e8re (2021), Anne Carson (2020), Richard Ford (2016), John Banville (2014), and Philip Roth (2012).<\/p>\n<p>There are eight Princess of Asturias Awards: the Arts, Social Sciences, Communication and Humanities, Concord, International Cooperation, Sports, Technical and Scientific Research, and Literature. They are aimed &#8220;at rewarding the scientific, technical, cultural, social and humanitarian work carried out at an international level by individuals, institutions or groups of individuals or institutions.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Princess of Asturias Awards ceremony is held in October in Oviedo, the capital of the Principality of Asturias.
