It\u2019s a deeply traditional region of ancient forests, wildflower meadows and tiny mountain towns, and it\u2019s home to eight UNESCO-listed painted monasteries, churches covered in colourful frescoes of Bible scenes and Romanian folk tales. It\u2019s also where the Via Transilvanica begins, Romania\u2019s 1,400km pilgrimage route that cuts diagonally across the country, passing through around 400 communities and taking roughly two months to walk in full,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.timeout.com\/news\/the-eastern-european-region-named-the-worlds-most-underrated-travel-destination-for-2027-101526\">another Time Out article on the subject<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The region was visited by editor Grace Beard, who signalled her enjoyment by ironically asking \u201cBran Castle, who?\u201d in the ranking.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBucovina is the heartland for the ancient Romanian art of egg-decorating. You can find hundreds of examples \u2013 and buy your own decorated egg \u2013 at the National Museum of Painted Eggs in Cioc\u0103ne\u0219ti, a town equally worth visiting for its 600 intricately painted wooden houses,\u201d she said in the same list.<\/p>\n<p>Second place went to the US\u2019 South Dakota, \u201cwhich has some equally dramatic national parks without the crowds of Yosemite or Yellowstone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Third place was won by the Asturian cities in northern Spain, while fourth and fifth place both headed to Latin America, to Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica and San Mart\u00edn in Peru.<\/p>\n<p>The 10 most underrated travel destinations for 2027 are, in order: Bucovina (Romania), South Dakota (US), Asturian cities (Spain), Osa Peninsula (Costa Rica), San Mart\u00edn (Peru), Zambujeira do Mar (Portugal), Bisbee (US), Shenzhen (China), Carry-le-Rouet (France), and Tioga Pass (US).<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bucovina, a region in northeast Romania, topped Time Out\u2019s newly updated list of the world\u2019s most underrated travel destinations for 2027.
