This year\u2019s theme, \u201cWitness,\u201d explores photography as a form of social and cultural engagement.<\/p>\n<p>The programme includes work documenting the siege of Mariupol by Ukrainian photographer Evgeniy Maloletka, the human experience of war and crisis by Iranian artist Toulo Adl Parvar, and displacement through the lens of Bosnia and Herzegovina\u2019s Vedad Divovi\u0107.<\/p>\n<p>The festival opens at Point on October 9 with <em>Witness: Images That Refuse to Forget<\/em><em>, a collective exhibition featuring photographers commissioned by the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR. The opening night will also include a screening of <\/em> Minamata, starring Johnny Depp as American photojournalist W. Eugene Smith.<\/p>\n<p>Photography-related films will continue at Cinema Union on October 16 and 17. The selection includes <em>Ernest Cole: Lost and Found<\/em><em>, <\/em> An Underground Bird<em>, <\/em> Finding the Landscape<em>, <\/em> Forgetting<em>, <\/em> KIN,<em> and <\/em> In Passing, followed by a discussion with Lithuanian director Gail\u0117 Garnelyt\u0117.<\/p>\n<p>Kulturhaus will serve as the festival\u2019s central venue, hosting seven exhibitions and artist-led tours. These include Adl Parvar\u2019s <em>Displacement (Ghorbat)<\/em><em>, Joakim Kocjancic\u2019s <\/em> SOLVARV<em>, Chiara Ernandes\u2019 <\/em> Still Birth<em>, Divovi\u0107\u2019s <\/em> Home of the Perpetually Lost<em>, Sigur\u00f0ur \u00d3lafur Sigur\u00f0sson\u2019s <\/em> Reykjanes Awakens,<em> and Maloletka\u2019s <\/em> Witnessing the War.<\/p>\n<p>Evgeniy Maloletka, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner, will also lead a workshop on war photography. Other educational events include workshops with Vedad Divovi\u0107, Sigur\u00f0ur \u00d3lafur Sigur\u00f0sson, and British photographer Justin Quinnell, as well as a photography walk through Bucharest led by Joakim Kocjancic.<\/p>\n<p>A children\u2019s programme developed with Save the Children will address bullying, exclusion, emotional difficulties, violence, displacement, and separation from parents. The resulting work will be presented at ARCUB on October 15 in the exhibition <em>In Plain Sight<\/em>, focusing on children\u2019s rights and adults\u2019 responsibility to respond.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, ARCUB will also host the Bucharest Photofest Conference on October 14, bringing together photographers, cultural managers, and other professionals from Romania and abroad.<\/p>\n<p>The programme also features photography book presentations, projections, DJ sets, and informal meetings.<\/p>\n<p>The closing event will take place at Control Club on October 18 and will include David Burlacu\u2019s exhibition <em>CTRL 18. Countless Versions of Becoming<\/em>, a DJ set, and a live concert by Romanian band The Speakers.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in 2016, Bucharest Photofest is organised by the independent Centre for Alternative Music &amp; Arts.
