Orange Romania held its Business Tech Now conference in downtown Bucharest on Thursday, October 1, to mark its increased focus on B2B solutions in cybersecurity, AI, and quantum-safe infrastructure.<\/p>\n
The event took place in the historic Palace of the Telephones and reunited Orange top management, representatives of national institutions, and business leaders. With small drones cruising overhead, Orange representatives outlined the company’s B2B offering.<\/p>\n
Julien Ducarroz, CEO of Orange Romania, opened the conference by highlighting the company\u2019s growth from connectivity to B2B solutions.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe go far beyond connectivity, and even there we have to talk about resilience and cybersecurity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Florin Popa, Orange business director, continued the opening address.<\/p>\n
\u201cOrange invested massively locally as well as at group level, to develop new, innovative services, especially in cybersecurity and cloud,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He also presented Orange Cyberdefense as a Europe-born large player in the sector.<\/p>\n
\u201cMaybe you don\u2019t normally see Orange as a key player in cloud and compute, but we operate the largest data center network in Romania, the largest such network operated by a single entity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
During the subsequent sessions, department heads within Orange talked about company initiatives regarding cybersecurity, data, and quantum tech.<\/p>\n
\u201cPreviously, fear sold cybersecurity. This is real, but incomplete. Security should not slow business, but give it confidence to move faster,\u201d said Madalin Dumitru, CEO of SCUT, Orange\u2019s cybersecurity firm in Romania.<\/p>\n
Vivien Mura, Global CTO of Orange Cyberdefense, doubled down on the interconnection between AI and cybersecurity.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat we have today is an explosion in the number of vulnerabilities, and that is the big problem for us. We also have a collapsing time to exploit vulnerabilities. It now takes only a few hours for a bad actor to exploit a vulnerability. AI is perhaps the most important ingredient in this new reality,\u201d Mura said.<\/p>\n
Frank De Jong, Program Director for Quantum Safe Networks and Edge Computing at Orange Business, delved into the company’s quantum push. Orange is currently exploring quantum applications, including the optimization of new mobile networks, while also preparing for the security risks posed by quantum-powered decryption.<\/p>\n
According to De Jong, 50% of experts expect a quantum computer to be able to break RSA-2048, a widely used asymmetric encryption standard, within 15 years, although the bigger concern is when data collected today could be decrypted in the future.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat matters is when and how your data will be at risk,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Orange\u2019s Quantum Defender provides quantum-safe migration, quantum-safe-as-a-service, and quantum-safe infrastructure based on post-quantum cryptography (PQC) and quantum key distribution (QKD). The company plans to launch PQC-secured network services by the end of the year and has already built commercially available quantum-safe infrastructure around Paris, with plans to expand it across France and eventually Europe.<\/p>\n
Finally, Ben Gibbins, Field CTO at Orange Cyberdefense UK, highlighted diverging approaches to post-quantum cryptography, which is meant to secure governmental and commercial data against quantum decryption.<\/p>\n
According to him, Romania\u2019s national post-quantum cryptography migration roadmap aligns with the European Commission guidelines. By December 31, 2026, NIS2 entities must complete cryptographic assets management inventories. By the end of 2030, production systems must achieve full PQC migration. The new system must exhibit crypto-agility. By 2035, all medium-risk use cases are expected to be covered.<\/p>\n
Big tech companies have more aggressive timelines, with Microsoft, for example, setting earlier targets. For Google, quantum computing will render traditional cryptography unsafe by 2029.<\/p>\n
This disconnect is bound to leave many Romanian companies and institutions vulnerable to \u201charvest-now-decrypt-later\u201d attacks from bad actors.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
