Romanian prime minister-designate Siegfried Mure\u0219an<\/a> said on Friday, September 18, that he was ready to form a \u201cserious, reform-oriented, and pro-European\u201d government. He announced that experts from the three parties backing him – the National Liberal Party (PNL), Save Romania Union (USR), and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) – would \u201cimmediately begin drafting a governing programme.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mure\u0219an, a member of the European Parliament, said his priorities would be presented at the beginning of next week, after which negotiations would be held with members of Parliament.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am prepared to form a serious, reform-oriented, pro-European government that presents an agenda for modernizing Romania, reflected in a higher standard of living and good measures for the people,\u201d he told journalists at the Parliament.<\/p>\n

He added that Romania needed a credible government as soon as possible to continue reforms and projects launched over the past year.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most important thing is what we will do for the country from the first day this government is invested,\u201d he said. \u201cWe will be extremely transparent at every stage of this process.\u201d<\/p>\n

In his turn, present at the same press conference, interim prime minister and PNL leader Ilie Bolojan said his party and experts from the ministries would provide the data needed for Siegfried Mure\u0219an to develop his programme.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe responsibility is the same as it was three months ago: to form a government,\u201d Bolojan said.<\/p>\n

He listed maintaining fiscal stability, ensuring the operation of the state and public services, preparing next year\u2019s budget, and creating conditions for economic recovery among the main priorities.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, USR leader Dominic Fritz said his party supported Siegfried Mure\u0219an because it considered him the right person to restore public confidence during a period of political and economic tension.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe intend to form a serious and coherent government with a vision based on trust,\u201d Fritz said.<\/p>\n

He further added that USR would also be open to discussions with the Social Democratic Party (PSD) to ensure a Parliament majority for the future government.<\/p>\n

PNL, USR and UDMR together hold 169 of the 233 votes required for investiture. Even with all 17 votes from the national minorities group, they would reach only 186, leaving Mure\u0219an to secure another 47 votes.<\/p>\n

Also present at the press conference on Friday, representing UDMR, T\u00e1nczos Barna said the objective should be a stable government able to remain in office until 2028. He argued that rebuilding the majority that collapsed in April, potentially under a rotating premiership arrangement, could still be the best option but would require talks with PSD.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe emphasize that we will not participate in forming any government that requires the support of AUR, SOS Romania or other extremist formations,\u201d Barna said.<\/p>\n

President Nicu\u0219or Dan proposed Siegfried Mure\u0219an for prime minister<\/a> on Thursday following almost six hours of consultations with parliamentary parties. The Liberal MEP accepted the proposal shortly afterwards.<\/p>\n

Dan said he would sign the nomination decree in Bistri\u021ba on Saturday, with its publication in the Official Gazette scheduled for Monday, according to News.ro<\/a>. Asked about Mure\u0219an\u2019s prospects of securing a majority, the president acknowledged that the task would be difficult but said he wanted him to succeed.<\/p>\n

PSD called on Siegfried Mure\u0219an to present his plans publicly and explain whether he intended to continue or change the policies of the Ilie Bolojan government. The Social Democrats said discussions about parliamentary votes should follow the presentation of the governing programme and measures for the population.<\/p>\n

Romania has been governed by Ilie Bolojan\u2019s caretaker administration since his Liberal-led cabinet was dismissed in a no-confidence vote<\/a> more than four months ago. If Siegfried Mure\u0219an\u2019s proposed cabinet fails to win Parliament\u2019s confidence, it would be the second rejected investiture request, potentially opening the way for the president to consider dissolving Parliament and calling early elections.<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
