More than 150 members of the party\u2019s Political Committee backed him during a hybrid meeting on Wednesday, August 19.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe system\u2019s mafia thought the anti-Fritz, anti-Timi\u0219oara law would divide us. They were wrong,\u201d Dominic Fritz wrote on Facebook. \u201cI thank the more than 150 colleagues who gave me a unanimous vote of confidence at today\u2019s USR Political Committee meeting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n<p>The meeting was convened by the party\u2019s National Bureau after the Constitutional Court approved on Monday the so-called \u201cFritz Amendment,\u201d introduced by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) into the law governing the National Integrity Agency (ANI).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Under the amendment, Fritz is expected to lose his position as mayor of Timi\u0219oara within 30 days of the legislation entering into force. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/romanian-president-prime-minister-constitutional-court-integrity-law-2026\" target=\"_blank\">The president<\/a> can theoretically send the law back to Parliament for reconsideration before it takes effect.<\/p>\n<p>The USR leader announced that he will challenge the decision at the European Court of Human Rights. He argued that the measure applies to a past action, although the Romanian Constitution states that laws should apply only to the future.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, also on Wednesday evening, hundreds of people gathered in Timi\u0219oara\u2019s Opera Square to protest the Constitutional Court\u2019s decision. The demonstration began at 7 p.m. and was organized by the Alternativa Civic\u0103 Timi\u0219oara Association and the Timi\u0219oara Initiative Federation, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biziday.ro\/366528-2\/\" target=\"_blank\">Biziday.ro<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The organizers did not provide an estimate of attendance, but images from the scene indicated that hundreds of people had joined the protest.<\/p>\n\n<p>Dominic Fritz also thanked those mobilizing \u201cfor the rule of law in Romania, regardless of political affiliation.\u201d \u201cOur position remains unchanged,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Timi\u0219 prefect Paul Finta <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/timisoara-mayor-salary-cut-conflict-interest-august-2026\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> that mayor Dominic Fritz will remain in office but have his salary reduced by 10% for six months following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/romanias-high-court-fritz-conflict-interest-jun-2026\" target=\"_blank\">a final court ruling that found him in an administrative conflict of interest<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>irina.marica@romania-insider.com<\/p>\n<p>(Photo source: Inquam Photos\/Virgil Simonescu)<\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Dominic Fritz has been unanimously reconfirmed as president of Romania\u2019s pro-European political party Save Romania Union (USR) following the Constitutional Court ruling that could cost him his mandate as mayor of Timi\u0219oara.
