{"id":11570,"date":"2026-08-17T12:02:50","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T12:02:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=11570"},"modified":"2026-08-17T12:02:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T12:02:50","slug":"body-found-in-romania-believed-to-be-british-teen-missing-since-november-2025","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=11570","title":{"rendered":"Body found in Romania believed to be British teen missing since November 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The body of 18-year-old British citizen George Smyth, a geology student at the University of Bristol, was found during search operations in Romania, according to an announcement from the Avon and Somerset Police cited by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2026\/aug\/15\/body-found-in-romania-believed-to-be-missing-british-hiker-george-smyth\">The Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Smyth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.romania-insider.com\/british-teenager-missing-hike-romania-2025\">went missing in November 2025<\/a>. The student, originally from Newport, Shropshire, is believed to have left Poiana Bra\u0219ov heading towards Bran. He reached the \u021aig\u0103ne\u0219ti area, from where he made an emergency call for help due to extreme exhaustion. A full-scale rescue operation was launched to find the missing teenager.\u00a0Canine teams also took part in the search-and-rescue operation, while drones and helicopters were used.<\/p>\n<p>Sebastian Marinescu, from the local Salvamont service, had previously told the BBC that the 18-year-old \u201cwas disoriented, physically exhausted and already showing signs of hypothermia\u201d when rescuers received the emergency call.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rescuers said that the young man was in a \u201cvery isolated and difficult-to-access mountainous area.\u201d At the same time, weather conditions were extremely severe, with strong winds, heavy snowfall and dense fog. As a result, the operation had to be ended.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, August 12, mountain rescue teams announced that they had resumed searches in \u201cthe previously indicated areas, beneath the rock walls, in hard-to-access sectors,\u201d but without success, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.libertatea.ro\/stiri\/trup-student-britanic-george-smyth-disparut-munti-noiembrie-2025-gasit-ciobani-5852311\">Libertatea<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>However, on Friday, August 14, parts of a human skeleton were discovered by two shepherds. Salvamont rescuers had searched the area recently, but the exact location where the body was found was covered in ice. A day later, Smyth\u2019s family was informed that a body with his identification documents was found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are all devastated by George\u2019s death.
