{"id":11096,"date":"2026-07-15T11:01:39","date_gmt":"2026-07-15T11:01:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=11096"},"modified":"2026-07-15T11:01:39","modified_gmt":"2026-07-15T11:01:39","slug":"romania-among-nine-states-urging-eu-to-reduce-funding-for-olympic-committee-after-lifting-russia-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=11096","title":{"rendered":"Romania among nine states urging EU to reduce funding for Olympic Committee after lifting Russia ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Romania and eight other states are urging the EU commissioner for Sport, Glenn Micallef, to reduce EU funding for the International Olympic Committee (IOC), following its decision last week to lift the suspension imposed on the Russian Olympic Committee, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/9-eu-countries-push-defund-olympics-russian-re-entry\/\">Politico<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The IOC imposed severe restrictions on Russian athletes after the country invaded Ukraine in 2022. However, in recent months, Russian athletes have once again been allowed to participate in several international sporting competitions, prompting negative reactions from Ukraine and its allies.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the IOC temporarily lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee. The IOC said it lifted the suspension because the Russian Olympic Committee no longer includes regional sports organizations, and therefore the athletes, from the occupied Ukrainian territories.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SwedeninEU\/status\/2077042775829213403\/photo\/1\">letter published<\/a> on Tuesday, July 14, by Sweden\u2019s Permanent Representation to the EU, sports ministers from the nine states urged Micallef to \u201censure that organizations whose actions are incompatible with the values of the European Union do not benefit from EU support.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Romania, Sweden, Estonia, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Latvia, Poland, Finland, and Denmark signed the open letter requesting the cuts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNothing has changed on the ground.
