{"id":10305,"date":"2026-05-23T21:00:28","date_gmt":"2026-05-23T21:00:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=10305"},"modified":"2026-05-23T21:00:28","modified_gmt":"2026-05-23T21:00:28","slug":"cannes-film-festival-2026-romanian-director-cristian-mungiu-wins-second-palme-dor-for-fjord","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ofero.news\/?p=10305","title":{"rendered":"Cannes Film Festival 2026: Romanian director Cristian Mungiu wins second Palme d\u2019Or for Fjord"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>Cristian Mungiu\u2019s Fjord\u00a0has won the Palme d\u2019Or for best film at this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>It is the second time the Romanian director wins the award, after his 2007 win for the abortion drama 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>The film stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a Romanian-Norwegian couple who become embroiled in a dramatic conflict with the Norwegian Child Protection Services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span>At the Cannes festival, <em>Fjord <\/em>was also granted the Fran\u00e7ois Chalais Prize, Prix de la Citoyennet\u00e9 (Citizenship Award), the Ecumenical Jury Prize, and the FIPRESCI Prize (International Critics&#8217; Prize).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Accepting the award, Mungiu described his film as a &#8220;commitment against all forms of extremism,&#8221; with a message of &#8220;tolerance, inclusion, and empathy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&#8220;It is important in cinema to speak about relevant things, in order to understand the direction in which the world is heading. We can do it by observing the people around us, our loved ones. And what I feel is that today\u2019s societies are fractured and radicalized. This film is also a commitment against all forms of extremism. It is a message of tolerance, inclusion, and empathy. These are beautiful words that we all love, but we need to apply them more often.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p>This was the fifth time Mungiu had a film in the official selection of the Cannes festival. In 2007, he won the Palme d\u2019Or for the abortion drama\u00a0<em>4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days<\/em>, which he wrote and directed. He is the first Romanian filmmaker to win the distinction. In 2012, he won the award for Best Screenplay for the film\u00a0<em>Beyond the Hills<\/em>. In 2016, he won the Best Director award for\u00a0<em>Graduation<\/em>, a prize he shared with Olivier Assayas, awarded for\u00a0<em>Personal Shopper<\/em>.
